Characteristics and Genetics

The Chester White Pig is a well-known domestic pig breed that originated in Pennsylvania’s Chester County.

Previously, the breed was identified as Chester County White. The big white pig strains from the northeastern United States and a male white pig imported from Bedfordshire were used to create the first “Chester White Pig” between 1815 and 1818. Also thought to have been mixed in are Chinese pigs.

The White Chester Pigs are extremely intelligent; they are omnivorous like people, contrary to popular belief that they are unintelligent animals (that is, they eat both other animals and plants). The Chester White Pig’s snout is its primary means of food discovery.

Among the white breeds, the Chester White is the hardiest type. He can gain up to 1.36 pounds (or 0.61 cm) of body mass per day, gaining one pound for every three pounds of food grain consumed. Chester White Pig breeds should have access to shade in the summer because of their pale hue, which makes them susceptible to sunburn.
