Training

To have a well-behaved Chessie, training and socialization are needed, ideally beginning at a young age. This breed is quick to learn and intelligent. But it can also be stubborn and independent. Therefore, it’s important to train consistently to avoid developing undesirable habits. For this delicate breed, only employ positive training techniques, harsh corrections may cause it to become defensive and unable to learn.

As early as possible, try to introduce your dog to a variety of people, pets, and environments. Positivity can counteract the breed’s protective drive and help it become at ease and self-assured with strangers.

Exercise

Chessies appear to never get tired and enjoy being busy. They have a lot of mental and physical energy to expend. Plan to exercise your dog for at least two hours each day, ideally more. For the Chessie, vigorous games of fetch are a great activity, as are brisk hikes, running, trekking, and swimming. Additionally, dog sports like dock diving can aid to mentally and physically exercise this breed.

Grooming/ Maintenance

Chesapeakes require relatively little grooming and are low-maintenance dogs. All that is required to maintain a Chessie’s coat in good condition is a weekly brushing. Brushing keeps your Chessie cleaner, reduces shedding, and helps to disperse the natural oil in their coat.

Diet

For the Chesapeake Bay, the list of nutrients includes glucosamine, vitamins, antioxidants, and probiotics.

Keep clean water on hand at all times for your dog. Additionally, provide your dog a high-quality, nutritionally balanced diet. Most owners give their animals two metered meals a day. To be sure you are addressing your dog’s specific needs, you should always talk to your veterinarian about the sort of food and the amount you are feeding him. For instance, if your dog is physically active, it may require more protein and calories.
