Characteristics and Genetics

Domesticated pigs of the Chato Murciano breed are thought to have originated in Murcia, Spain. It was raised and is still raised for its ability to produce bacon and lean meat in its native region. The current breed of the Murcian type was not up to Spanish standards in Murcia. They required a more advanced pig breed. To solve this issue, they crossed the Murciano with the Victoria, Tamworth, Berkshire, and Large White breeds.

Due to its tiny snout, the breed was given the Spanish names “chato” (short-nosed) and “Murciano,” which both imply “from Murcia.” The Chato Murciano pig, the only remaining breed that has historically and locally been produced in Murcia, is in danger of going extinct. Despite being in risk of going extinct, it is a well-managed pig that produces bacon and lean meat.

A tough breed, the Chato Murciano pig is particularly well suited to the dry, warm climate of southern Spain. The breed is excellent for producing bacon and lean meat. If fed locally gathered raw ingredients, the breed will grow healthily. The breed’s lifespan is typically between 12 and 15 years.
