Description:

The Changpa nomadic people in the Changthang regions of Ladakh, which include the Kharnak, Rupshu, Demchok/Skakjung, and Pangong Lake regions, rear these goats, which are typically domesticated.

Both sexes have huge, twisted horns that can grow to a length of 55 cm. Small and upright, the ears. A thick undercoat of fine pashmina and a long outer coat of hair make up the coat, which is often white but can also be black, brown, or gray. It has white or light brown skin.

Changthangi-Goat-Farming.

Behavior:

Goats from Changthang are powerful, hardy, and very active animals. They are mostly raised on a free-range grazing technique all year long. They are exceptionally tolerant of the cold and can live in Ladakh, where it can get as cold as minus 20 °C, by eating just grass.

Benefits/Uses: 

The Changthangi goat is primarily utilized for the manufacture of high-quality cashmere wool. Yet they are also appropriate for producing meat.

Origin/History:

The stunning Changthangi goat can be found in Kashmir, India’s chilly and arid region around Ladakh. The breed was named after the Changthang region in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, where it is native.

In the Changthang region of Greater Ladakh, Kashmir, nomadic groups known as the Changpa typically domesticate and rear the Changthangi goat. One of the highest plateaus in the entire planet is located here. Throughout the summer, these goats move to higher elevations between 12,000 and 19,000 feet, and in the winter, they return to the valleys.
