Characteristics and Genetics
The phrase “carried-under-arm pig” refers to the practice of locals who frequently carry little, black pigs of this breed under their arms before selling them at fairs. On the steep hills, this variety of free-range pigs frequently engages in self-feeding.
Domestic pigs of the Small Black or Suffolk breed first appeared in the United Kingdom in the nineteenth century.
Uncertainty surrounds the breed’s history; however, it was formerly believed that in an effort to “improve” the Essex pig, foreign breeds were crossed with it to create the new species.
