Carpenter ants belong to the species Camponotus maculatus (genus Camponotus). African Camponotus maculatus is a stunning species. These ants develop quickly and become fairly enormous in size. They prefer dry woodlands or sand to build their nests. Because Camponotus Maculatus is monogyne, the colony can only have one egg-laying queen. Up to 10,000 people can work in a colony. The workers can grow up to 16mm, while the queen can reach up to 18mm!
Care
Camponotus maculatus maintenance is not difficult. They eat a lot, grow quickly, and are quite forgiving.
Food
Non-picky eaters include Camponotus maculatus. Fruit sugars, sugar water, and ant jellies are all favorites of theirs. They thrive on fruit flies, mealworms, crickets, and other tiny insects as a source of protein.
Humidity
Camponotus maculatus doesn’t require a lot of humidity. It is more than enough to partially hydrate the nest. The colony doesn’t require any nest hydration as it gets bigger.
Temperature
Camponotus maculatus thrives in a warm environment. The ants will have a great gradient to work with if you warm up a portion of the nest.
Hibernation
Camponotus maculatus sometimes goes into hibernation followed by a brief diapause of a few months during which colony activity declines.
Sting/Bite
Majors who sting or bite can quickly puncture your flesh and will bite you. Because they are so aggressive, use caution when interacting with these ants and protect your hands by using gloves.
Tip from an experienced keeper
Make sure to have a closed outworld with both a vertical and a horizontal fluon barrier because these smart chicks will easily run over it.
