Description

Size: Male: 12 – 15 pounds Female: 10 – 13 pounds

The medium-sized California Spangled cat has a slender and muscular body type. They approach their prey with the same beautiful low-slung gait that big cats use to kill their prey. Their short, spotted coat, which has pronounced triangle, square, or oval spots, was bred to imitate the wild cat’s. They have an exotic appearance. They also have chiselled cheekbones and almond-shaped, typically light amber to deep copper-colored eyes.

Origin and History

Paul Casey, a Hollywood screenwriter, made the decision to create a domestic cat breed that looked like a little leopard in the 1970s. He had this thought after visiting Tanzania and witnessing the suffering of spotted cats, such as leopards, who were being illegally poached for their fur. In order to spread awareness and save the lives of these wonderful wild cats, he then set out to breed a “house leopard.” He was certain that if the fur looked like their beloved pet, people wouldn’t continue to purchase pricey fur jackets.

After a successful breeding programme, the California Spangled cat breed was released on the market in 1986. In December 1986, the breed made its premiere on the cover of the American mail-order catalogue Neiman Marcus. Although there was initially a lot of enthusiasm, the breed took a little to catch on. They continue to be an uncommon and unique cat breed, with only 58 California Spangled cats ever registered. There were 200 cats on the planet at its peak. After Paul Casey’s passing in 2007, the breed was no longer acknowledged.

Behavior

Activity Level: high

Social Needs: This breed, which is renowned for being loving, kind, and gregarious, enjoys spending lots of time with its owners.

The California Spangled loves being around people and the centre of attention and is highly affectionate and caring. They enjoy engaging in games of stalking and pouncing to practise their hunting skills, and they adore interacting with and playing with family members. This breed is very gregarious, so if it feels stressed out or lonely, it may behave out. It might also withdraw if it doesn’t get enough human contact.

The energetic and athletic California Spangled Cat is exceedingly active. Due to their high intelligence, they may be quickly trained to perform a variety of tasks, including walking on a leash. It’s a good idea to get some cat trees or towers because this breed enjoys heights and seeks out high areas.

The California Spangled Cat is a calm and affectionate companion that is known to develop strong ties with its owners. They enjoy spending lots of time with their family, hugging and cozying up on the couch. The Spangled is a naturally outgoing breed that also enjoys mingling with other cats and household pets. They also appreciate giving and receiving attention.

Food & Diet Requirements

California Spangled cats are carnivores, just like all other cat breeds. They therefore need high-quality diet that is primarily composed of animal protein. These cats can consume the equivalent of 1 cup of dry commercial food or wet food each day. Their diet shouldn’t have any artificial flavours or fillers like maize, soy, or wheat and should only contain the first item to be beef, chicken, or fish. It’s advised to adhere to the feeding recommendations on the food package because these cats tend to overeat when given unrestricted amounts of food.

Exercise

Due to its lively nature, the California Spangled cat needs to be physically active throughout the day by playing and exploring. When necessary, human companions can engage their cats in play by utilizing toys made of balls, feathers, and strings to provide them with additional exercise and excitement. This breed can benefit from play tunnels, climbing trees, and scratching posts to maintain both healthy physical and mental health.

As they will have a playmate to play with when their humans are gone, adding another cat to the household is a terrific method to ensure that your kitties get the exercise they require. Your California Spangled cat will probably enjoy playing fully chasing your other cat around the house.

Grooming

There are no matts or tangles to worry about with the shorthaired breed of California Spangled Cat. The cat’s coat should just require a fast combing or brushing twice a week to stay tidy, lustrous, and dander-free. To prevent them from scuffing up furniture and drapes, their nails should be cut roughly once a month. The need for monthly flea treatments is also possible. A licensed veterinarian can suggest an efficient course of treatment.
