Buckeye Chicken

buckeye-chicken

An American breed of chicken is called a Buckeye. Nettie Metcalf invented it in Ohio in the late nineteenth century. Its plumage was designed to match the color of the seeds of the Ohio Buckeye plant, Aesculus glabra, which gives rise to the nickname “Buckeye State.”

Description

The distinctive body shape of Buckeyes includes a sloping, short but broad back, extremely meaty thighs, and strong wings and breast. The undercolor (fluff) of the rear of the Buckeye also has a bar of slate color. In the American Class of fowl, only some breeds have the characteristic of tight feathering. A chicken breed with multiple uses is the Buckeye. They have yellow skin and legs and can withstand chilly temperatures because of their vivid red pea comb. They have a yellow beak with reddish horn shading, a red cheek, wattles, and earlobes. Their eyes are reddish-bay.

  • Housing

The Buckeye requires a spacious, well-ventilated coop. Per bird, four square feet should be sufficient. A minimum of ten square feet should be provided for each Buckeye if you plan to keep them in a run.

  • Feeding

In comparison to other birds, Buckeyes do tend to need a little bit more protein in their diet. A meal with 10% more protein than standard chick starter can be used to produce buckeye chicks.

To keep the levels of protein high, many people feed their mature Buckeye hens food intended for game birds. Mealworms and other high-protein treats are also an option. High-quality eggs are ensured by feeding your laying hens more protein and calcium.

  • Grooming

These chickens enjoy running around and playing in their dust bath. It will assist with bugs, excess feather oils, and give their feathers an extra glossy sheen to add some additional herbal/essential essences to the loose sand. These chickens enjoy being held by their owners and receiving attention, so they are sure to have no issues with routine checks for mites, lice, and other parasites. To keep your chickens healthy, check their feathers at least once a week for these pests. Always have your birds de-wormed on a regular basis, particularly if they interact with kids or other animals.

  • Temperament

The Buckeye is often a calm, curious chicken that is easy to handle and is safe to keep around kids. It is not known for intimidating other birds and is not known for being particularly frightened of people. The Buckeye has excellent foraging abilities and does well when given free range because it is genetically predisposed to be a game bird.

The Buckeye requires a safe place to roam because it is not always predator-aware. As long as it has room to roam, it manages to survive confinement. The Buckeye is a lively breed that excels at flying and is renowned for being a watchful mouser.
