Characteristics and Genetics

One of the most well-known domesticated pig breeds in the UK is the British Landrace.

Four boars and eight gilts from a 1949 import of 12 landrace pigs from Scandinavia gave rise to the breed (immature females). The British Landrace Pig Society was established in 1950, and it opened a herd book for the first progeny of the imported 12 that were born. With a testing facility in the North Yorkshire village of Stockton-on-the-Forest, they established the first pig testing program.

The British Landrace is a fairly adaptable breed that does well in both indoor and outdoor management regimes.

Sows can produce large litters of piglets with excellent daily gains and high lean meat content, and their excellently fleshed carcasses are perfect for producing bacon or fresh pork.
