Brain Cactus

brain-cactus.

In reality, the appearance and shape of a cacti’s ribs vary from one to another, making each one unique. The cactus is still frequently quite small and round in shape. They range in colour from bright green to gray-green and have spines that are brownish. In the spring and summer, they produce striking flowers that are about an inch across. It is better to plant the brain cactus in the spring, when the weather has warmed up, as it develops more slowly.

Care Guide

Light

Full daylight, or at least six hours of direct sunshine most days, is necessary for brain cactus to thrive. Although they can tolerate some shadow, lower light levels prevent them from reaching their full potential and producing their greatest flowers. Put your brain cactus by the room’s brightest window if you’re indoors. Usually, the best window is one that faces west.

Soil

Like melon cactus, these cacti demand rocky, sandy soil with sharp drainage. But if there is excellent drainage, they can live in a variety of soil types. The pH of the soil doesn’t need to be too acidic or too alkaline. The finest potting mix for container plants is one that quickly drains and is developed especially for cacti and succulents.

Water

It is advisable to let the soil almost entirely dry out between watering of your brain cactus in order to prevent root rot. The plant can withstand drought well. Watering should be sufficient in the spring and summer at around once every two weeks. Reduce watering to once every three weeks to once per month once the weather begins to become chilly in the autumn, and continue in this manner through the winter. Since the cactus is not actively growing throughout the winter, it requires less water than it does during the summer.

Instead of watering more frequently in smaller amounts, it is preferable to water extensively and then wait for the soil to dry up. Overwatering is more likely to occur with the later strategy. After watering a container plant, always empty the drip tray.

Fertilizer

The brain cactus is not a heavy feeder, but when it is actively growing, it does benefit from some fertilizer. Use a liquid fertilizer developed specifically for cacti and succulents on your plant in the spring and summer. In the autumn and winter, when the cactus goes dormant, there is no need to fertilize.
