The Boykin Spaniel is a medium-sized breed of dog that was developed in South Carolina’s Wateree River Swamp to hunt wild birds and ducks.
Characteristics
At three days old, its tail is customarily docked, leaving 1/3 of it. Bright and captivating eyes. From dazzling gold to dark amber, the color is varied. Until they are a few months old, puppies will have milky bluish-gold to amber eyes. Liver or chocolate are the available coat colors. The length and density of this breed’s coat can vary significantly due to the wide variety of breeds that make up its recent lineage. The hair is fine, medium in length, flat to slightly curled, with adequate light feathering on the legs, feet, ears, chest, and belly.
Dogs that need grooming should only be lightly stripped or clipped, with some topline and head shaping. Some people have a topknot resembling the Llewellin Setter. Field kinds are frequently shaved down, and if the length is sufficient to protect the skin, it shouldn’t be punished. Some coats will grow back with significant fading, discoloration, or graying if they are shaved incorrectly.
Care as a Pet/ In Captivity
One of the many reasons Boykin Spaniels have gained popularity as family dogs is their reputation for being simple to train. However, this breed requires an owner with enough time to devote to its well-being when it comes to exercise. Boykin Spaniels also need routine grooming to keep their silky, medium-length coats in good condition.
Exercise
The majority of sporty breeds won’t be content with a daily stroll of just a few blocks. Boykin Spaniels are high-energy dogs who require one to two hours of exercise per day to remain happy and healthy, making them perfect partners for dog parents who enjoy going on hikes, swimming, biking, and running. Grooming
Boykin Spaniels have medium-length hair that isn’t prone to matting or tangles, making maintenance a breeze. Regular brushing, bathing, and dental hygiene are all emphasized. Given that this breed’s ears have lengthy hair, give them a little additional care by cleaning them frequently. After playing outside, don’t forget to gently brush your dog’s fur and look for ticks.
Nutrition and Diet
Boykins thrive on a high-quality, high-protein diet, like the majority of dogs. Be careful not to overfeed your dog if you want it to keep its perfect, athletic frame.
