Bluetick Coonhound

Bluetick coonhound

A type of coonhound with American roots is the Bluetick Coonhound.

Traits

The Bluetick Coonhound has a powerful and swift general build. Without displaying any signs of fright or anxiety, the tail is crossed over the back and the head is carried up. Black ticking on a white backdrop provides the impression of a navy-blue color, giving the Bluetick Coonhound its “blue” coloration.

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

To be happy and healthy, Bluetick Coonhounds need a lot of exercise, coupled with adequate training and socializing. It’s also necessary to control their impulse to pursue a scent. Fortunately, they have fairly basic grooming requirements.

Exercise

Bluetick coonhounds are high-energy, endurance-bred hunting dogs. So it’s essential to do enough exercise every day to burn that energy. Aim to engage in brisk walking, jogging, hiking, and play for at least one to two hours per day. To give your dog a mental and physical challenge, enroll it in dog sports like tracking and agility.

When exercising, always keep your dog on a leash or in a safe, enclosed space. Once these dogs pick up a smell, it can be quite difficult to get them to stop wanting to pursue it, and they can travel very far very quickly. Even if they are in a fenced area, it is best to keep an eye on them because they can be skilled escape artists.

Training

They are strong, athletic, and require a full-time job or hobby like agility, obedience, or hunting to be happy. They can be difficult to teach, and you should keep an eye on them when they’re near cats or other small animals. Once trained, the breed members are extremely respectful of their owner.  Be consistent with your training cues and always utilize positive training techniques. Enroll as soon as you can in an obedience course. Participating in other dog-related activities, like tracking, can also help you and your dog’s relationship grow closer.

Training and socialization are both crucial. To increase your dog’s comfort and confidence, introduce it to a variety of people, pets, and environments from an early age. Lack of attention can cause blueticks to exhibit undesirable habits, such as overusing their booming hound bay.

Feeding

In general, feeding a Bluetick Coonhound 212 to 3 cups of premium dry dog food daily, divided into two or three meals, is advised. Your dog should always have access to fresh water. And feed your dog a high-quality, nutritionally-balanced meal. Most owners give their animals two metered meals a day. Depending on the animal’s age, activity level, and other criteria, the type of diet and the amount should be discussed with your veterinarian. To avoid your dog overeating, be careful while giving treats and other foods.

Maintenance and Grooming

Use Aloe Hydrating Spray to hydrate and moisturize the skin and coat during the dry winter months or in dry locations. Use Espree Ear Care to clean your ears once a month. Use Espree Ear Care Aloe Wipes if weekly maintenance is required for an existing chronic ear disease. This regimen will assist in preventing ear issues. A bluetick coonhound’s short, lustrous coat sheds only moderately. Most of the time, routine basic grooming is all that is required to keep your coonhound looking its best. To disperse oils and remove stray fur, brush once a week.

Depending on how unclean your dog has become, aim for a bath every month or so. Additionally, determine each month if it needs its nails trimmed; active dogs frequently naturally wear down their nails and can wait longer between trims.
