Blue Meanies

Blue-meanies

Scientific name

Panaeolus cyanescens

Description

Panaeolus cyanescens  are distinguished by their short, slender stem that leads to the cap. The cap is often a light beige, nearly white appearance and develops to a diameter of 1.5 to 4cm. Due to its light color, a damaged mushroom may actually display a strong and rapid bluing reaction that resembles a bruise. Because of this, these mushrooms have earned the endearing moniker “blue meanies.” However, be aware that this name is also used to denote other types of mushrooms. When young, the cap edge is incurved. The caps are somewhat hygrophanous, losing pigment as they dry and frequently cracking in dry weather. The stipe is usually 7 to 12 centimeters long and 2 to 3 millimeters thick. The width is consistent throughout the length but slightly increased at the base. The stem is the same shade as the cap and is coated in a thin white powder. They are also known as Copelandia cyanescens.

Blue Meanies

Habitat

They are most widespread in warm regions such as Mexico, Bolivia, Brazil,  Eastern Australia, the Philippines,  India, Southeast Asia,  Bali,  Hawaii, Louisiana, and Florida. Blue Meanies can be seen growing solitary or in bunches on the cow or horse manure in pastures and meadows. They emerge during the spring or wet seasons.

Uses/Importance

Panaeolus cyanescens are highly potent psychedelic mushrooms due to their high production of psychoactive chemicals psilocybin and psilocin. Panaeolus cyanescens has greater amounts of psilocybin and psilocin than other magic mushrooms.. Some researchers have noted that this species contains considerable amounts of serotonin, urea, and baeocystin, which could also be hallucinogenic.

In addition to the hallucinogenic substances, Panaeolus cyanescens also generate serotonin and tryptophan. Serotonin has several vital functions, including that of a neurotransmitter, in which it can boost sensations of happiness and mental well-being. People with low serotonin levels may experience mood disorders like anxiety or a general sense of being down.  depression, In this context, psilocybin, which is contained in Panaeolus cyanescens, has been investigated as a possible treatment option for anxiety, and mood disorders.
