Blue Gourami

Size

For adults, the typical blue gourami measures between five and six inches. Although there is a tiny size difference between men and females, it is not extremely pronounced.

Physical Appearance

The blue gourami is undoubtedly a unique and vibrant freshwater fish! Its profile is the same as that of other gourami species: long, flattened body; huge, rounded fins. These fish have pectoral fins that resemble needles and an enormous anal fin. The silvery-blue colour, however, is what draws the most attention. Depending on the fish’s attitude and when they are reproducing, this colour can get darker. You’ll see some light blue marbling that is modest on many blue gourami specimens. On the fins, you might even spot a few spots of yellow!

The two dark spots are yet another distinctive characteristic. One is at the body’s centre, while the other is right in front of the tail. Even though it is known as a “three-spot gourami,” there are only two spots that are visible. The fish’s eye is actually on the third!

Habitat

Freshwater fish known as blue gourami are primarily found in Southeast Asia in countries like Vietnam, China, Cambodia, Thailand, and Indonesia. However, the Trinidad, Philippines, India, and Sulawesi have recently introduced this fish outside of their native habitat.

Tank Size

A 20-gallon tank is sufficient for young adolescent blue gouramis, which are typically only a few inches long. A single adult blue gourami can survive in a tank the same size if you have one.

However, for adults, it is advised to use a tank with a capacity of closer to 30 to 35 gallons. These energetic fish will have more space and comfort in a tank this size.

Water Parameters

Blue gouramis can survive in a wide range of conditions and are quite resilient. To maintain their health, you must adhere to the advised water quality standards.

Replicating the waterways in their natural habitat is the aim. When it comes to the health of your fish, taking the time to create ideal water conditions will pay off in spades.

Water temperature: 72°F to 82°F (around 76 degrees is the sweet spot)

pH levels: 6.0 to 8.0 (a neutral pH is best)

Water hardness: 4 to 18 dKH

Food & Diet

When it comes to food, this species is fairly easy to please! They are willing consumers of the majority of food items and are natural omnivores. On balanced algae-based dry flakes or pellets, blue gourami thrive.

However, you can always add better-quality items to their diet as a supplement. They like treats that are live, frozen, or freeze-dried. Bloodworms, tubifex worms and brine shrimp are all excellent options.
