Appearance
Chalcedony with the dark green to dark bluish-green hue with crimson or brown flecks is called bloodstone. The name of this gemstone is because of the spotting’s resemblance to bloodstains. The spots could be extremely petty, nearly nonexistent, or they could be thick and tangled.
Geographical Distribution
Usually discovered as pebbles embedded in rocks or riverbeds, the main sources of this gemstone are Australia, Brazil, and India.
History
The word “heliotrope” comes from the Greek words “helios,” which means sun, and “trepein,” which means to turn. This name alludes to an old idea that the stone would reflect the sun’s light and turn it red when submerged in water. The stone’s timeless appeal throughout history has been influenced by its connection to the sun and its alluring look.
Bloodstone was thought to have originated from the staining of jasper by the drop of Christ’s blood at the foot of the crucifixion. Plasma is another term for bloodstone. It has little to no red and is an opaque, deep green in contrast to the heliotrope variety.

Chemical Composition
Chalcedony is a kind of quartz microcrystal that is also referred to as bloodstone or heliotrope. The chemical formula for quartz is silicon dioxide (SiO2), which makes up the majority of bloodstone’s composition. Bloodstone, however, gets its unique color and appearance from the presence of iron-bearing minerals like hematite, chlorite, and epidote.
Uses
- Traditionally, bloodstone has been used in men’s jewelry. It was frequently used to seal letters and documents by cutting it into the shape of a signet and mounting it on a ring. Men’s cufflinks and rings are increasingly fashionable with flat-top or gently domed cabochons.
- Bloodstone is thought to support healthy circulation, strengthen the immune system, cleanse blood-rich organs like the liver, kidneys, bladder, and intestines, and lessen menstrual disorder symptoms.
