Blanding’s Turtle

Blanding’s Turtle

Beautiful semi-aquatic turtles include the Blanding’s turtle, commonly referred to as the “semi-box turtle.” As a medium-sized turtle, they can grow up to about 10 inches in length.

Their bright yellow neck and chin set them apart from other species as a distinctive trait. Typically, their upper shell is dark in color with a few scattered, tiny yellow dots.

The fact that these turtles exhibit no symptoms of aging and, in some circumstances, have life spans of up to 100 years is one feature that makes them highly intriguing. They are regarded as a very non-senescent species as a result.

Habitat

They frequently inhabit the coastlines and big lakes. They favour clear water with little depth. They like coastlines that are simple for them to access because of their small size. They can occasionally be discovered floating in the water or hiding on wet logs. They can conceal themselves on mossy boulders thanks to their shell.

Being semi-aquatic, they favour places with lots of plants. They remain in transient wet places to avoid predators that live in the water. They can be discovered during the overwinter in shallow lakes and as deep as two feet under moist soil.

Food

As an omnivore species, Blanding’s turtles consume both meat and vegetation. They have the ability to catch live fish in the wild. In addition, they enjoy eating berries and frogs. Typically, it is believed that their diets are a balance of carnivorous and herbivorous foods.

They also consume other insects like beetles, lizards, and dragonflies. One of their favourite prey is crayfish. As they get older, they start to favour carnivorous foods like fish. In addition to fruits, they can be fed dried shrimp, tuna, and nutritional turtle pellets. It is important to remember that each turtle will have specific feeding preferences, and it is the owner’s responsibility to observe and learn what these are.
