The Red Star (Krasnaya Zvezda) Kennel in the USSR developed the Black Russian Terrier, often referred to as the Chornyi Terrier, during the late 1940s and early 1950s for usage as working and military dogs.

Appearance

A thick outer guard hair sits on top of a softer undercoat in the double-coated coat. They have a double coat that is made up of a thick undercoat and a rough exterior.

Care as a Pet/ In captivity

Black Russian terriers don’t require a lot of exercise every day. However, socialization and early training are vitally crucial. Their grooming requirements are likewise rather complex.

Exercise

The black Russian terrier only requires a minimum of 30 to 60 minutes of activity every day, despite its huge size. These dogs enjoy going on hikes, jogs, swims, and walks. They also adore puzzle toys and a boisterous game of fetch. Additionally, canine sports like agility and rally can help people and their dogs both physically and mentally.

Grooming

At least once or twice a week, give your black Russian terrier a thorough brushing to avoid mats and tangles in the thick coat. This large dog can take at least a half-hour to brush, but it’s essential to do so to maintain the health of its skin and coat. To maintain the beard and brows neat, you’ll also need to trim them from time to time. Every few months or so, many owners choose to have their pets professionally groomed. Their coat needs to be brushed at least once every week, if not more. Additionally, dogs can develop lengthy facial hair that gives them a scruffy appearance. Periodically, they will need to be either trimmed by their owner or by a professional groomer.

Training

Early training is essential, and they respond well to strict, persistent training by performing exceptionally well in obedience competitions. They also excel in other canine sports including Schutzhund training and agility.

Diet

Your dog should always have access to fresh water. And feed a high-quality, nutritionally balanced dog food. Two measured meals per day are customary. However, you should always go over the sort of food and the amount with your veterinarian.

To stop your dog from overeating, keep an eye on treats and other additional food. Be mindful of this breed’s size. Take precautions to stop it from accessing things it shouldn’t have since it could be able to swipe food from a table or counter. Each day, this breed will consume a lot of food. On average, they consume 3-4.5 cups of food each day.
