Description
Life span: up to 30 years
The head, neck, and forehead of the black-headed caique are all black, with a gray beak. The feathers, wings, and tail are all an intense shade of green. It has a golden neck and thighs and a white tummy. Usually, this lovely parrot’s feet are black. The black-headed caique is a favorite among bird aficionados due to its colorful plumage.
For good reason, caiques have been dubbed the “clowns of the avian world,” and this excitable, medium-sized troublemaker certainly matches the clown stereotype. Owner hasn’t experienced playfulness if the owner hasn’t seen a caique in action.
Habitat/Native Region
The black-headed caique is a South American endemic that can be found in Brazil, Guiana, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Colombia, French Suriname, Venezuela, and Peru, all of which are located above the Amazon. Black-headed caiques live in low-lying wetlands or damp woods.
As Pet
Behavior
They enjoy interacting with people and other birds and are highly animated. For the entertainment of their fans, they routinely pull pranks and perform stunts. Black-headed caiques are quite cuddly and will seek out company because of their social nature.
The black-headed caique is known for having a bad attitude. They don’t appreciate being neglected, and if they do, they’ll nip a person. It is best to avoid introducing other bird species to a caique since they could become hostile while defending their area.
Care
Even though it is a medium-sized bird, the caique needs a big room. For this lively bird, being confined to a small cage would be quite challenging. Consider building a small aviary if a person has the resources, or at the very least, give caique the largest cage person can manage. The aviary needs to be kept tidy to protect the health of black-headed caique. Weekly washing of the perches and toys and daily scrubbing of the water and feeding bowls are advised.
