You must choose a tank that is at least 20 gallons in size to care for the black axolotl. The tank must have plenty of room for swimming and hiding, as axolotls prefer it. Furthermore, they frequently jump out of the tank due to their reputation as jumpers. So it is preferable to include a tank lid. These axolotl colour morphs don’t need any out-of-water areas inside the tank because they enjoy an aquatic environment. Consequently, you are free to add water to the tank.

Diet

The black axolotl is a carnivore, hence its diet must have abundant amounts of protein. The nutritional needs of melanoids are rather simple. Regarding what to feed them and what not to, you don’t need to do much research.

With a protein-rich tray of worms and tiny fish, they will fare well. Foods like earthworms, bloodworms, prawns, mealworms, tuna, brine prawns, etc. are typically preferred by them. You must, however, keep in mind that axolotls have extremely slow digestive systems. Therefore, you should give them food every two to three days.
