Black and Tan Coonhound

black and tan coonhound

An example of a hunting dog breed is the Black and Tan Coonhound. This scent dog, particularly utilized for raccoon hunting, was developed in the United States through crosses between the Bloodhound and the Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound.

Appearance

The dog’s long, wide, thin ears hang deep down the neck and are placed low and far back on the dog’s head. The dog has eyes that are brown to hazel in color. The black and brown hues are reminiscent of the markings on Doberman and Rottweiler dogs. The breed standard calls for strong legs that are appropriately long for the body length. The tail is placed just below the natural line of the back. When a dog is alert or excited, its tail is carried at a right angle.

Diet

With a high-quality commercial or home-prepared dog food (under veterinary supervision), the black and tan coonhound should do admirably. Water that is both clean and fresh should always be accessible. Treats should be provided sparingly, as with all breeds, and their diet should be restricted to prevent obesity- or weight-related problems. Black and Tan Coonhounds should be fed food that contains at least 18% protein. The best food for your Black and Tan Coonhound is Stella and Chew’s rendition of supper patties. It is abundant in premium ingredients and reasonably priced.

Grooming

A Black and Tan is simple to groom. Brush him a couple times a week to remove any dull hair before it ends up all over the home because of his short and dense coat. The black and tan coonhound needs weekly cleaning with items like a brush or rubber grooming mitt to help remove the dead hair before it ends up all over your home because of their short, dense coat that sheds once or twice a year. Additionally, regular grooming will keep their skin and coat healthy.

Also needing basic maintenance are black and tans. Regular nail trimming and periodic bathing are recommended for these busy dogs because long nails can be uncomfortable. Their teeth should be brushed routinely with canine toothpaste at least twice a week, as with all breeds. Additionally susceptible to infections, this breed’s ears need to be cleansed and examined frequently.

Training

The black and tan coonhound is thought to be an independent breed, despite being bright and devoted to their families, therefore training them can be difficult at times. Although they can be trained, these are not dogs that will blindly obey their owners at all costs. For this breed, early socialization and puppy training sessions are advised since once they learn something, they will be more likely to stick with it. A must-have is consistent training from the beginning.
