Bichir

Size

Maximum of 14 inches, but no more than 16 inches (41 cm) (36 cm)

Physical Characteristics

Bichirs have cylindrical bodies that resemble reptiles. Ganoid scales are multilayered, rhomboid-shaped scales that cover the body. They have an outside layer made of ganoine, a middle layer made of dentine, a layer made of isopidine, and an interior layer made of dermal, cosmine bone tissue.

Temperament

Although this species is fairly quiet among other large fish, it is semi-aggressive in that it will devour any fish or invertebrate that it can fit in its mouth.

Habitat

It can be found in flooded places, lakes, and streams. They frequently have dense vegetation.

Keeping as Pet

Bichir..

  • Tank Size

For a single adult Delhezi Bichir, a tank of 100 gal. is suggested. Before being transferred to their larger, permanent aquarium, juveniles may begin their life in tanks that are 20 to 50 gallons in size. Make sure the aquarium is big enough to accommodate your Delhezi Bichir and your other fish’s behavioural needs if tank mates are involved!

  • Water Parameters

Delhezi Bichirs prefer temperatures between 76 and 83 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite the fact that these robust fish can tolerate a broad variety of temperatures, installing an aquarium heater and thermometer is advised for the majority of tanks.

Delhezi Bichirs are resilient and can live in a variety of water environments, but they favour soft, acidic conditions. Your bichir will live comfortably in an aquarium with a pH range of 6.0 to 8.0 and a GH range of 5 to 20.

  • Feeding

The Delhezi Bichir is a carnivorous fish that hunts at night and needs a diet high in protein to keep healthy. To improve their health, different live, frozen, and dry bloodworms, ox hearts, weather loaches, nightcrawlers, and shrimp are suggested.

Don’t forget the nocturnal habits of the armoured bichir! Due to the complexity and danger of altering a fish’s natural feeding behavior, nighttime feeding is essential. Pellets may still be used to complement the diet of Delhezi Bichirs, who must eat live and frozen animals.

  • Tank mates

Delhezi Bichirs can easily be kept with other calm, medium-sized fish because they are often tranquil fish. While they usually get along with other Polypterus or Synodontis species as well as cichlids, Angelfish, Tigerfish, and other species, it’s best to avoid any noisy or rambunctious colleagues because they can compete with your banded bichir for food and succeed.
