Characteristics and Genetics
A rare breed of domestic pigs is the Berkshire. Since it came from the United Kingdom’s Berkshire county, it was given the name Berkshire.
Only 300 breeding sows of Berkshire Pigs are known to exist, according to a 2008 research. However, the Rare Breeds Survival Trust in England keeps herds of Berkshire pigs in Aldenham Country Park, Hertfordshire.
Under the trade name Kagoshima Kurobuta, they are also raised in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan.
While the original Berkshire stock was sandy-brown, the most recent breed is totally black.
It is well known that Berkshire pigs are intelligent.
