Belgian Tervuren

belgian tervuren dog

Created in Belgium in the late 19th century, the Belgian Tervuren dog breed is often considered to be the most elegant of the four Belgian sheepdogs. They are intelligent and athletic, making them a versatile performer in any number of activities, including their original job, herding.

Physical Characteristics

The Tervuren is a long-haired dog, medium sized and with an athletic build. Square in appearance with a sharply intelligent face, pricked ears and alert expression. Often confused for a long-haired German Shepherd Dog, the Tervuren is a much lighter, racier build with a more refined head.

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

A Belgian Tervuren will require a significant time commitment. It’s great for these dogs to have an involved owner who can offer them challenging mental and physical activities, regular training, and socializing. Fortunately, the breed’s grooming requirements are not too complicated.

Exercise

These canines were created from the ground up to be active. Additionally, they would rather exercise with their owners than on their own. Give them brisk walks, running, hiking, fetch, and other physical activities for at least one to two hours each day. Toy puzzles can aid in keeping their minds active. Dog sports, including agility and herding, are also a terrific method to promote both mental and physical fitness.

Diet

Belgian Tervuren needs a complete nutritional diet daily for a happy and healthy living. Provide them with a complete balanced diet either they eat commercially manufactured dog food or homemade food. They need a good amount of food for the proper development of their physiques and mind. Although they need to eat 4 times a day, the amount you feed them should be in a small portion.

Grooming

Brushing Belgian Tervuren carefully and thoroughly, removing knots, mats, and tangles. · Before bathing Belgian Tervuren, clip their coat if required. The strong double coat of the Tervuren sheds only slightly. To get rid of tangles, loose fur, and filth, schedule brushing sessions at least once or twice every week. Additionally, expect heavier shedding times from time to time as the seasons change. These times call for more frequent brushing to keep up with all the loose fur.
