The medium-sized Belgian Laekenois is a herding breed with pointed ears, an athletic build, and a double coat of wiry, curly fur. The Laekenoi is renowned for having a strong sense of family attachment, especially to young ones. If you don’t provide them enough stimulation and attention, they could develop destructive, neurotic tendencies. Grooming these dogs is a weekly task as well, albeit it takes less time than exercise and training. Plan to spend around two hours a day with this dog, dividing that time between mental and physical activities. These dogs thrive on challenges, making dog sports an excellent alternative for physical and mental exercise.
Physical Characteristics
Belgian Laekenois are alert, proud, and squarely formed herders that stand between 22 and 26 inches tall. They have a strong, well-muscled appearance that is more graceful than massive, and they have an unpretentious appearance appropriate for dogs bred to work hard for their food. The proud head carriage is a breed characteristic. The hues of the coat span from a deep fawn to mahogany. Dark Belgian chocolate-colored eyes that are vibrant and inquisitive are highlighted by the black ears and mask.
Care as a Pet/ In Captivity
Some people are not a good fit for the Belgian Laekenois breed. These dogs typically don’t perform well in apartments since they require a lot of area to play and run around. They work best for active owners who can give their pets plenty of opportunities to exercise both their bodies and minds. To ensure that these dogs are well-mannered, proper training and socialization are also necessary. And maintaining them is fairly easy.
Exercise
A Belgian needs vigorous daily exercise as well as mental stimulation. Otherwise, it can experience anxiety or exhibit behavioral issues. Aim for one to two hours of activity each day, which can include brisk walks, running, hiking, and fetch. This breed is also a top choice for dog sports or any other activity that requires concentration and stamina to challenge both its mental and physical abilities.
Be warned that Belgian may have a propensity to chase bicycles, cars, and other moving items due to their herding instinct. Therefore, it must be restrained by a leash or kept in an enclosed space.
Diet

Grooming

The short, straight coat of the Belgian is weatherproof and has a thick undercoat. Just minimal grooming is required. This breed is typically very trainable, smart, and eager to please. It responds well to constructive criticism and persistent guidance.
Early on in a Belgian ‘ puppyhood, training and socialization should start. As soon as your dog reaches the required age, sign up for a puppy obedience class and start exposing your dog to new people, pets, and environments. Although Belgian don’t always get along with other dogs, early good introduction to canine companions can be beneficial.
