Beefalo

beefalo

Size

1.397 meters.

Color

Dark black/red to light fawn is common.

Physical appearance

Although the Beefalo’s appearance can vary widely, in general it has a massive frame and is highly muscled, standing similar to the Bison in stature.

Characteristics and Genetics

Beef is a hybrid offspring of domestic cattle (Bos taurus), which in planned breeding operations is typically a male, and the American bison (Bison bison), which in managed breeding systems is typically a female. In order to produce meat, the breed was developed to mix the traits of the two species.

Beefalo

Diet

Beefaloes require little to no grain feeding, in contrast to cattle. They are perfect for both harsh weather and rough or worn vegetation since they can survive on a wide variety of grasses in both extremely hot and very cold weather and require less grass than cattle.

Behavior

The proportion of American bison DNA in hybrid cattle determines how they behave. They resemble cattle the most in terms of look, behavior, and genetics when it comes to beefalo. They will behave more like the parent American bison if they continue to breed with them. Cattle stay close to trees and water sources while bison roam more and are more hostile. A herd of beefalo consists of roughly 12 animals and is more submissive. Beefalo ranchers keep bulls apart from cows and calves until breeding season, in contrast to how bison normally group cows and calves with bulls in a separate herd. As heavier milk cattle are dominant over lighter milk breeds and lighter meat cattle are dominant over heavier meat breeds, the domestic cow breed that produced the beefalo can also influence behavior.
