This breed is a scent hound-type hunting dog with short legs that originated in Brittany, a former duchy of France. These quick canines like playing and are avid hunters.
Physical Characteristics
Short-legged scent hound-style hunting dogs like the Basset Fauve de Bretagne were developed in Brittany, a historic duchy of France. However, occasionally a litter of bassets will yield dogs with long legs because of the controversial tradition of registering mixed litters of Griffon and Basset Fauves. They weigh between 36 and 40 pounds and have a height range of 32 to 38 cm. It might be necessary to remove their thick, tough fur. Although they don’t mat readily and their coat is dirt-resistant, they still need to be combed and groomed once a week. The development of the breed in France as a hunting dog was based on the larger, extinct Grand Fauve de Bretagne.
Care as a Pet/ In Captivity
Food
The proper proportions of each of the major nutritional categories, as well as a steady supply of clean water, must be included in a dog’s diet. For optimum health and performance, their diet should include biologically suitable proteins, healthy fats, ground bones, and vegetables that are rich in vital vitamins and minerals.
Exercise
Basset Fauve de Bretagnes require a respectable amount of activity for their size, at least two hours every day. These agile dogs enjoy playing and hunting, so caution must be exercised when letting them off the leash. They also need to be educated to come when called as puppies or they may become “deaf ear” to your commands and only respond when it is convenient.
Grooming
The tough, dense coats of Basset Fauve de Bretagne dogs only require weekly combing and biannual plucking, making them low maintenance. The extra hair around their ear passages should be cut, but their coats should never be trimmed.
