Banded Leporinus

Banded leporinus fish

Size

Members of the species Although Leporinus fasciatus can reach a maximum size of 30 centimeters (12 inches), the species matures at about 15 centimeters (6 inches) in length (5.9 in).

Physical Characteristics and Behavior

Tall and lean, with enormous eyes and an unnaturally small cranium. The body is composed of nine to ten black bars, and the color is generally beige to lemon yellow. The first one begins at the base of the tail, while the second one crosses the top of the head and enters the eye. The other fins are translucent and transparent, and the bottom has a different fork. The neck is frequently an orange to red tint in males.

Habitat

The freshwater intermediate layers, where this striped fish resides, have an average temperature of 75.2 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius). Fish called the black-banded leporinus (Leporinus fasciatus) can be found in a variety of aquatic habitats, including freshwater rivers, rocky streams, and flooded forests.

Keeping as Pet

Banded leporinus

  • Care of Aquariums

If the banded leporinus’ water is kept clean, taking care of them is not too challenging. Every other week, especially if the tank is heavily populated, at least 25 to 50 percent of the water should be replenished. Be very careful not to remove too much algae from the aquarium because this fish needs it as food.

Water Changes: Every two weeks

  • Setup of an aquarium

You can keep these fish individually or in groups of six or more. They do get quite huge, and a single individual will require an aquarium at least 50 gallons large, and a group much larger. Provide a tank that is ideally at least 60 inches long or longer. After consuming all the algae they can find, they could start to nibble on certain planted areas since they prefer them. Growth of algae should be promoted. Driftwood and twisted roots will make maintenance easier. Sand and some sizable, smooth boulders should make up the substrate in order to promote the growth of algae. This fish will jump out of the tank if the cover is not fitted tightly.

A river manifold system or numerous powerheads can be used to achieve the desired moderately strong water flow. The ideal filters for keeping the tank clean and well-oxygenated are large canister filters. A strong current will be maintained with the help of the canister filter.

  • 50 gal. minimum tank size (189 L)
  • Not suitable for a Nano tank
  • Sand/Gravel Mix Substrate Type
  • Low-intensity, subtle lighting is required.
  • 72 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit (22.2 to 27.8 degrees Celsius)
  • pH: 5.5-7.5 Hardness: 2-20 dGH Range
  • Brackish: No
  • Strong Water Movement
  • Water Region: Bottom. These fish will swim in the middle to lower portion of the tank.
  • Type of Diet: Omnivore Despite being omnivorous, they favour plants and will eat the majority of aquarium plants.
