Description:

Scientific name: Petrosaurus thalassinus   

Life span: 2-20 years

A big, nocturnal phrynosomatid lizard species is the Petrosaurus thalassinus of Baja. It has a body that is flattened, small, smooth, granular scales, and scales that are slightly keeled near the tail. The neck is yellow with blue dots and streaks, and the head is bluish with reddish to orange hues around the eyes. With darker cross bars, the back of the tail is gray blue. Both sexes’ coloring becomes more pronounced during breeding season.

Native Region/Habitat

It can be found on the Islas Espiritu Santo and Partida Sur in the Gulf, as well as in the Sierra la Laguna (and its neighboring mountains) and Sierra la Trinidad of the Cape region of Baja California Sur. distribution of elevation in the Sierra la Laguna, from sea level to 2,020 meters.

The near surroundings of rocky canyons, boulder-strewn hillsides, arroyo bottoms, and seaside cliffs are where Petrosaurus thalassinus is most frequently discovered.

Behavior:

It enjoys more than 90 °F temperatures and sunbathing on rocky desert terrain. Since it has a flattened body, this wary species can quickly hide into rocky crevices to avoid predators and bad weather. It can spread a skin flap around its throat if it feels threatened. It has the ability to drop its tail when trapped, like many lizards.

Care As a pet/In captivity:

Diet: Mealworms and crickets of the proper size.

Habitat: It is advised to use a 20-gallon long tank with reptile-approved sand, a hideout, basking lights that are about 100 degrees, and UVB illumination.
