Characteristics and Genetics
The breed, sometimes known as Australian Whites, was created in Australia as a low-maintenance, hairy (no fleece), self-replacing meat sheep. a stable breed developed from the sheep breeds of Poll Dorset, Texel, White Dorper, and Van Rooy. The four breeds were chosen based on those characteristics. The breed was very recently brought to New Zealand, mostly via embryos from AWSB Ass registered flocks. They are renowned for not having wool and for producing meat of a caliber comparable to Wagyu. These Australian Whites can endure the sweltering heat of the desert and the harsh winters. They can gain weight by consuming poor desert grass and bushes, but they also thrive in pastures with high-quality grass.
