Size

Australian rainbow fish may grow relatively large, up to a length of 10 centimetres. Under ideal circumstances, their maximum size is 4 inches (about 10 cm). Not every species or subspecies can grow to that size, it is important to note. Most of them can reach a height of 2 inches (5 cm).

Physical Appearance

Without a doubt, the colour is the main factor in why most people select Australian rainbow fish. The majority of customers buy it primarily to enhance the colors in their aquariums. The rainbow fish of Australia are renowned for its stunning colour hues. The complete spectrum of colors, including vivid colors of purple, blue, red, orange, green, and yellow, could be present on their silver bodies.

Fish that are mature show off their most vivid colors while breeding. It has a colorful body, an elongated shape, a mouth with a deep fork, and large eyes. They have two dorsal fins and a flattened body on either side. The fins’ opulent decoration is highly striking and enhances their allure and beauty.

The central-scale rows have a dark silver or black band that runs through them, which enhances the attraction of their broad body. Males who are older tend to have somewhat humped bodies and backs.

Habitat

Australia, Papua New Guinea, and some regions of Indonesia are home to rainbow fish.

Their natural environment consists of marshy land with streams, rivers, lakes, and marshes that are rich in flora and have little to no current. They are frequently found in close proximity to logs and other submerged structures, or under floating vegetation.

Tank Size

When kept in groups of seven or more, Australian Rainbow Fish flourish in planted tanks with gravel bottoms. They favour large tanks with enough of swimming space. For simple housing, 20–50 gallon aquariums are required. How many people you want to introduce to your aquarium will determine this.

For a school of eight fish, a 50-gallon tank would be more than enough. However, you must take larger aquariums of 100 gallons into consideration if you intend to retain more than ten Australian Rainbow Fish and add tank companions.

Temperature, pH Levels, Hardness

You should make an effort to offer additional conditions that satisfy the needs of the Australian Rainbow in addition to the tank size. For your fish’s best health, it is essential.

Water’s pH level should be maintained so that it is consistently between 6.0 and 7.5. It’s ideal to always keep it between 6.5 and 7.2.

The water needs to range from 3 to 25 DH in terms of hardness. In soft to medium water, Australian rainbow fish prefer to live.

For best health, the water’s temperature should be between 72°F and 82°F. They can resist temperature changes.

Diet

The rainbow fish found in Australia are all omnivore. Their natural food includes algae, small invertebrates, and insects.

This makes feeding them very simple. They are accustomed to consuming food on the surface because they are insect feeders. They would be well to choose omnivore flakes with a healthy protein balance in general.

Giving them roughly 75% flake food and 25% meaty variety food is a decent rule of thumb. Live and frozen options are both good options:

Brine shrimp

Chopped blood worms

Chopped earthworms

White worms

Feed the fish two to three times per day, but only for a few minutes each time. By doing so, you’ll prevent food waste from amassing and your rainbow fish from overeating.
