Australian Garden Orb Weaver Spider

australian garden Orb_weaver

This spider (Eriophora transmarina) is a widespread species of spider that may be found throughout Australia’s coasts in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. When well-fed, they have enormous abdomens and a wide range of colors, from off-white to tan to nearly black. On the top of their abdomen, they have a roughly leaf-like pattern with a complicated outline that is darker than the background.

There could also be a few stripes or pale patches. The proximal (near to the body) leg segments of spiders are often darker, primarily reddish or reddish brown in color. With each molt, they can alter their color to more closely resemble the scenery they are resting in. With a body length of 20 to 25 mm as opposed to 15 to 17 mm for the males, the female is larger than the male. A needle-like epigynum that protrudes in the direction of the spinnerets can also be used to identify females.

Morphology

The Garden Orb Weavers, which are frequently observed, are thick, reddish-brown or gray spiders with a pattern resembling a leaf on their fat, roughly triangular abdomens. These abdomens also have two distinct humps toward the front. They can have a dorsal stripe that is brown or white with white edges.

Habitat

Spiders that weave orbs create suspended, gooey, and wheel-shaped orb webs. Wherever insects are expected to fly, such as between trees and shrubs, webs are positioned there. There are orb-weaving spiders all over Australia. Eriophora biapicata and E. transmarina are frequently found in Garden Orb Weavers in eastern and southern Australia.

Diet

The spider hangs up the food for later or carries it to the center of the web to consume. These spiders would release large victims when food is available rather than risk a fight that could harm their web. Common prey includes flying insects like flies, beetles, and bugs, including huge prey like cicadas.

Risk to humans

Orb weavers are wary about biting. Localized numbness, swelling, and little to mild pain are typically the only symptoms. Occasionally, feeling sick or lightheaded might follow a bite.

Worth of Australian garden orb weaver spider

Orb weavers are beneficial because they can lessen insect pests, especially mosquitoes, around the house.

As Pet

Outdoor spiders include garden orb weavers. Many of them construct large silk webs that cannot fit in constrained areas. You can keep them in your gardens or backyards, but there is a chance that they will escape.
