Australian Cockroach

Australian-Cockroach-header

With a length of 23–35 mm, the Periplaneta australasiae is a common species of tropical cockroach (0.91–1.38 in). It resembles the American cockroach quite closely and might be confused for it. It has yellow stripes at its sides close to the base of its wings and a yellow edge on its thorax, however it is slightly smaller than the American cockroach.

Appearance

  • Australian cockroaches can grow to be between one and a half inches long. They are frequently confused for American cockroaches due to their size and primarily brown appearance.
  • However, characteristic yellow highlights, especially light golden lines around the front margins of their wings, make them immediately distinguishable from American roaches.
  • The male has a pair of microscopic appendages called styli that it uses for mating in addition to a pair of cerci, which both sexes have.

Habitat

The Australian cockroach is a colonial-dwelling outdoor species. These species must live in warm environments and frequently go inside when it becomes too cold outside. They typically live in moist environments like the bark of trees and piles of wood or leaves.

Diet

Australian roaches can be found indoors near food and water in places like sinks, bathtubs, cabinets, drains, and water pipes. Unfortunately, the kitchen is a prime area for colonization because it is so close to a food source. Large constructions such as malls, retail complexes, apartment buildings, and shopping centers are also susceptible to infestation by Australian cockroaches.

Life Cycle

Australian cockroaches take roughly a year to develop from an egg to an adult. A mature cockroach lives for 4 to 6 months on average. Within egg cases, each containing about 24 eggs, females lay their eggs in protected regions and in materials like damp wood. The female will conceal the little egg case out of sight when it’s time for the eggs to hatch. Cockroach eggs (or even nymphs) are not likely to be found very frequently because the creatures are so cautious at these stages.

As they mature, nymphs (baby cockroaches) molt multiple times, eventually growing wings, but first acquiring blotchy yellow patches down their backs. Nymphs mature into adults and start hatching their own eggs around 6 to 12 months. The Australian cockroach lives for 4-6 months as an adult.

Why doesn’t it remain a pet?

Australian cockroaches can carry salmonella and other pathogens. You definitely don’t want these pests to invade your house and like the food you prepare. When plants are forced into a small area, like a nursery because of chilly conditions, they might also suffer damage.
