Size
The Auratus cichlid typically grows to a length of 4.5 inches, or 12 centimetres. They can reach a height of more than 4.5 inches with the right care. However, the male Auratus cichlid is larger than the female.
Physical Appearance
The Auratus is a yellow cichlid with black horizontal stripes and numerous unique characteristics, therefore it is not difficult to identify them. Their lengthy bodies are covered in closely spaced teeth that resemble incisors. With the use of these teeth, they can eat a wide variety of different fish as well as algae, creatures, and biofilm.
Habitat
The Monkey Bay on the west shore of Lake Malawi is where the Auratus cichlid originally came from in Africa. Their closely spaced teeth are appropriate for their feeding, and they are mostly found in rocky areas.
Keeping as Pet
Tank size
For one fish, your Auratus cichlid tank must hold at least 50 gallons. A larger tank is required if you plan to raise more fish. Ideally, one with a capacity of at least 120 gallons. The aggressive Auratus cichlid and other fish species are less likely to battle over territory in larger tanks.
Substrate Type
Regular gravel or sand mix is preferred for Auratus cichlid. The pH of the tank is impacted by the substrate you select. For example, crushed coral will favour a higher pH whereas sand maintains a lower pH. These substrates have an impact on the pH of the water in addition to giving the Golden Mbunas a place to dig, which lessens their natural aggression.
Temperature
You must maintain the tank’s temperature between 73 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit.
pH
7.7 to 8.6 is the ideal pH range for a tank containing Auratus cichlids.
Hardness
It is suggested that you maintain a water hardness of 6 to 10 dGH.
Lightning
Keep the tank’s lightning at a reasonable level.
Diet
They are primarily herbivores and need a diet full of vegetables as well as pellets made specifically for cichlids.
