Asiatic Toad

Asiatic Toad

East Asia is the only place where the Asiatic toad, also known as the Chusan Island toad (Bufo gargarizans), may be found. Previously, the species was categorized as a subspecies of the common toad called Bufo bufo gargarizans.

Habitat

It is widespread in parts of the Russian Far East, as well as in China. The Miyako toad is another name for the Bufo gargarizans miyakonis subspecies of the Miyako. While avoiding deep forests, the Asiatic toad can be found in most other environments, like open woodlands, grasslands, cultivated areas, and meadows. It rarely occurs above 800 meters in elevation and favours humid environments.

Appearance

The snout-vent length of this toad varies from 56 to 102 mm. It has many characteristics with the Common Toad (Bufo bufo), with the primary differences being the presence of spines on the dorsal skin tubercles and a black strip that runs from the parotoid’s outer surface to the body flank. either a very tiny or skin-covered tympanic membrane. big tubercles on the dorsum. Dark grey, olive grey, or olive-brownish on the dorsum with three broad longitudinal bands. Onto the body flank, a broad dark stripe spreads from the parotoid’s inner surface. This band is split into two substantial spots posteriorly. Grayish or yellowish in colour, with or without patterns in the rear. Similar to the Common Toad, there are variances in sexual orientation. Men are generally smaller than women. While females have a broader skull, men appear to have proportionally longer hindlegs.

Reproduction

Reproduction takes place in bodies of stagnant or partially flowing water, such as lakes, ponds, marshes, puddles, old riverbeds, ditches, and rivulets. Prior to females, males reach breeding zones. Pectoral amplexus is used. The clutch is made up of two 1.5–2.3 m long strings of eggs, each carrying 1200–7400 eggs. Summertime is when metamorphosis happens. B. Gargarizans  mass mortality larvae are found in ponds with a lot of the brown frog Rana dybowskii tadpoles. The bulk of adults in this toad are between 5 and 6 years old, and sexual maturity is likely reached during the third or fourth year of life.

Relations with people

Traditional Oriental medicine makes extensive use of Asiatic toads. Toad venom, often referred to as chan-su, is an extract of the toad’s poisons that has long been promoted for its therapeutic benefits.
