Arnica

Arnica.

Description:

Perennial herbs of the arnica species range in height from 4 to 28 inches. The basic leaves have smooth or serrated margins, are oriented in opposition, and frequently have glandular trichrome (hairs). Achene fruits, a kind of simple dry fruit, are produced by the composite flower heads, which are typically yellow and have pappus (bristles) for fruit distribution. Numerous species possess rhizomes. Despite being widely used in homoeopathic and folk medicine, arnica is poisonous and, if used internally, can be fatally poisonous.

Habitat

Although Meadow Arnica is indigenous to western North America, it may be successfully grown throughout the country.

Uses

Many diseases, such as bruises, sprains, aches in the muscles, wound healing, superficial phlebitis, joint discomfort, inflammation from bug bites, and swelling from fractured bones, can be treated topically with arnica.

Arnica

Species

Significant species, is a perennial herb found in the mountains of northern and central Europe. It is commonly planted as a decorative in gardens and yields an essential oil that was once used to cure sprains and bruises. The orange-yellow flower heads of narrow leaf arnica (A. angustifolia), which grows in Arctic Asia and America, measure 5-7 centimetres in diameter. This species is protected in different countries.

Plant Care

  • Well-established arnica plants don’t need much care. Arnica is not a drought-tolerant plant, so frequent irrigation is the most important factor to take into account.
  • Make sure to water the soil frequently enough to maintain a mild moisture level; avoid letting it get too dry or waterlogged.
  • Watering should generally occur when the soil’s surface feels just a little bit dry. To promote continuous flowering throughout the season, remove any wilted flowers.
  • Fertilizer: The benefit of arnica is that it doesn’t require fertilization. It can grow without additional feeding. Dig deeply before planting and apply a fertilizer that is balanced.
