Appenzeller Sennenhund

appenzeller-sennenhund

The medium-sized Appenzeller Sennenhund is a tricolored, somewhat square-built, and balanced herding breed. He makes a good driving, watch, guard, house, or farm dog since he is robust and agile. They are excellent at agility, obedience, herding, and search and rescue because of their adaptability and eagerness.

The Appenzeller Sennenhund, commonly known as the Appenzeller Mountain Dog or Appenzell Cattle Dog, is one of the four breeds of the Swiss Sennen type. He is vivacious, upbeat, assured, trustworthy, and brave. He is a decent watchdog who cannot be bought, but he is a little wary of strangers. The intelligence of the breed makes them excellent learners. He is not a good fit for flat life because of his personality and demand for exercise.

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

The Appenzeller Sennenhund favours a busy schedule filled with frequent exercise. It also requires routine grooming. Start early with socialization and training.

Exercise

This active breed will require at least a few hours per day of exercise. This dog enjoys having a task to complete and keeping its mind active. Running, cycling, hiking, long walks, and swimming are all excellent hobbies. Along with physical activity, dog sports like agility and herding trials can also stimulate the mind. Additionally, puzzle toys can present mental difficulties.

It is recommended for this dog to reside in a house with a safe garden where it can run around without fear. It’s not the best for living in a flat or being kenneled for extended amounts of time every day.

Grooming

To get rid of stray hair and avoid mats and tangles, brush your dog at least once every week. Expect heavier shedding times, which are typically seasonal in the spring and autumn and when you’ll probably need to brush more regularly.

Depending on how unclean it becomes, give your dog a bath around once a month. However, make sure to examine its ears at least once per week to see whether they require cleaning. Averagely, you should give it a monthly nail trim and daily canine toothpaste brushing.

Training

Ideally, you should begin socialization and training while your dog is a puppy to stop negative behaviors from developing. This canine is intelligent and fast to take up orders, yet it may also be stubborn at times. Additionally, it struggles to adapt to stern punishments. Use rewards and praise together with other positive reinforcement training techniques at all times. To sustain your dog’s interest, make training sessions enjoyable and interesting.

To increase your dog’s comfort and confidence with strangers, expose it to a variety of people, dogs, and environments. This may reduce its natural tendency to defend.

Diet and Nutrition

Make sure your dog has access to clean water at all times. To make sure your dog is getting the right nourishment, feed it a high-quality canine diet in two metered meals each day. But make sure to go through the type and quantity of food with your veterinarian. Depending on their age and degree of exercise, certain dogs require particular diets.
