Characteristics and Genetics
Modern domestic cattle in America are of the Ankole-Watusi breed. It is descended from the east and central African Sanga cattle breeds known as the Ankole group. After some were brought to the country, a herd was established in New York State in 1960 by mating some of them with an unrelated Canadian bull.
Uses
Although their primary uses are for milk and exhibition, Watusi cattle are also utilized for meat production and for show. They don’t produce a lot of milk on their own, but because their milk only has the aforementioned 10% fat content, they are crossed with other cattle to increase the amount of butterfat in their milk.
They are employed less frequently than other breeds for the production of meat. However, because it is leaner and lower in cholesterol than other types of beef, their meat has a lot to offer. They frequently appear at cattle shows or even petting zoos because this breed is still somewhat of a novelty breed.
