Characteristics and Genetics
A rare domestic pig breed raised mostly in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, is the Angeln Saddleback pig. The German town of Angeln is where it all began. A local German black-and-white Landrace pig and a Wessex Saddleback pig were crossed to create the breed.
The breed was recognised as a unique and distinctive breed in Schleswig-Holstein as early as 1937.
Saddleback pigs from Angeln are tough creatures. They are highly suited for extensive pig farming systems or outdoor management.
The sows make excellent moms and are quite fertile. The milk they produce is sufficient for the piglets.
