History

Jean-Claude Delamétherie gave the mineral andalusite its name in 1798 in honor of the Andalusian region of Spain, where it was originally found. But in El Cardoso, a distant part of Spain, the original form of andalusite was discovered long before Christ was born. Another name for andalusite is the “poor man’s Alexandrite.” One of the other names for andalusite is cross stone. Greek custom holds that andalusite is a kind of chiastolite. These ornate crystals were employed for both decorative and medicinal purposes by the ancient Greeks.

Types
