Characteristics and Genetics

The American Yorkshire is a large domestic pig breed. It is the pig breed that is most prevalent in the US. It comes from pigs of the British Large White or Yorkshire breed that were periodically imported from Canada or the United Kingdom between around 1830 and the middle of the 20th century.

Because of their size to length ratio, they are hardy and strong and also highly active. They require a little bit more area than other varieties of pigs, but because of their advantages, most farmers choose to favor them. Large litters are produced by sows, who also have exceptional maternal instincts.
