The American Water Spaniel is a happy, active outdoor dog that enjoys swimming and hunting. It is a native of the upper Midwest lake country. They are reputed to be cheerful, enthusiastic, and endearing, albeit reserved with strangers and a little headstrong. American Water Spaniels are powerful mid-sized gundogs who are not very showy in appearance or behavior. Their lush brown coat may identify them, which is either tightly curled or wavy. Exercise
Your American water spaniel should exercise for at least an hour every day. Along with vigorous play sessions, suitable activities include walks, jogs, hikes, and swims. Additionally, canine sports like dock diving and agility can test your dog’s physical and mental limits.
An American water spaniel can become destructive and/or bark excessively if it does not receive enough mental and physical stimulation. Puzzle toys can keep your dog entertained, but you must also schedule daily exercise for it.
Grooming
Every week, brush your dog to get rid of any loose fur. The rich undercoat of the breed can be cleaned with a slicker brush to help remove the dead hair. As the weather warms up and the undercoat thins, expect more shedding, at which point you’ll probably need to brush your dog a little more frequently. However, the breed as a whole sheds little.
Depending on how unclean it becomes, give your dog a bath around once a month. After baths and swimming, make sure to thoroughly dry the ears, and check the ears at least once a week to see if they require cleaning. Additionally, give your dog a monthly or biweekly nail trim and daily teeth brushing.
Training
Ideal times to start socialization and training are when your American water spaniel is still a puppy. Treats and praise are effective positive-reinforcement training tools for this breed. Aim to socialize your dog from an early age with a variety of people, dogs, and environments in addition to obedience requirements. The breed’s occasionally reserved behavior with strangers can be lessened by having a lot of favourable experiences.
Diet and Nutrition
Your American water spaniel should always have access to fresh water. A high-quality canine diet with balanced nutrients should also be consumed, often in the form of two measured meals per day.
