History and Origin

The two-toned horses that the Spanish explorers brought to North America and which were descended from horses from North Africa and Asia Minor are the ancestors of the Paint Horse.

Diet and Nutrition

A paint horse should eat quality grass, grains, hay, and certain fruits and vegetables as part of a general equine diet. Supplementing with vitamins and minerals may be necessary. But because this breed is prone to obesity, it’s crucial to avoid overfeeding your horse.

Grooming

Standard equine grooming practices will keep the paint’s gorgeous coat in good condition. To get rid of dirt, debris, and tangles, brush and comb your horse at least once or twice a week for pastured horses, or every day for stabled horses. Make checking your horse’s hooves for debris, infections, and injuries a daily ritual.

Temperament

The amiable nature of the American Paint Horse is well known. The American Paint Horse is a pleasure to train for performance competitions and, more importantly, is a great friend outside of the ring because of its sweet disposition and innate intelligence.
