History
Due to the obtuse angle between the cleavages, August Breithaupt named the mineral, which he first discovered in Saxony in 1817, from the Greek words amblus, blunt, and gonia, angle. It was later discovered in Montebras, Creuse, France, and in Hebron, Maine. The mineral from these locations has been given the names montebrasite and hebronite due to minor variations in chemical composition and optical characteristics. It has been found in significant quantities in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Caceres, Spain, and Pala in San Diego County, California.
