Description

Lifespan: 50-60 years

The majority of amazon parrots are green with contrasting colors on the crown, face, and flying feathers; these colors differ between species. They have short, rounded tails and wings and are medium- to large-sized parrots. They have a large bill, an obvious notch on the top of the mandible, and a prominent bare cere covered with setae.

Habitat/Native Region

The Neotropical Americas, which include South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, are home to Amazon parrots. More than 14 different species of amazon parrots have been spotted outside of their natural habitats. Since its introduction to Genoa in 1991, there have only been two reproducing populations of Amazona in Italy. They can also be found in Spain, where the turquoise-fronted amazon is the most prevalent parrot species.

Some Amazon parrots prefer drier habitats like savannas, while most live in woods like scrub forests, palm groves, and rainforests.

Behavior

The very clever, outgoing, and renowned talkers known as Amazon parrots. They easily adapt to their cage or aviary and do well in captivity. Amazons demand a lot of cerebral exercise. An Amazon parrot is more prone to behavioral issues if it isn’t given the right amount of care, social engagement, and toys.

As Pet

Housing

The cage should be as large as you can fit and afford for an Amazon parrot. The minimum cage size is 2 feet by 3 feet by 4 feet, however larger cages are preferable. Some owners go so far as to designate tiny areas as aviaries so their pet birds can fly around freely. To prevent your bird’s body parts from being stuck, make sure the cage bar spacing is as little as possible.

There are a variety of toys, swings, ladders, and perches inside the cage. Make sure everything in the cage is secure and harmless because amazons enjoy chewing. Include food and drink dishes as well, and make sure they are placed so that bird droppings won’t land in them.

Food

Wild Amazon parrots eat a range of berries, seeds, fruits, nuts, and plants. Pet Amazons should consume fresh produce each day in addition to pelleted bird food. Given that dietary needs might change depending on a person’s size, age, and level of activity, talk to your veterinarian about the quantity and variety.

Place a day’s supply of pellets in a chew- and tip-proof dish inside the cage because birds like to graze throughout the day. An excellent alternative are dishes made of stainless steel that fasten to the cage’s side. After 24 hours, throw away any uneaten pellets before adding the next day’s supply. In a separate dish, fresh items should be provided, particularly in the morning when your bird is awake and hungry.

Exercise

Amazons need a lot of exercise to stay fit because they enjoy eating a lot and are prone to obesity. Additionally, physical activity gives their sophisticated minds the necessary mental stimulation. A daily minimum of three hours must be spent outside of a cage so that an Amazon can move around freely and stretch its muscles.

To promote activity, keep toys both inside and outside of the cage. The best way to engage your bird and get it moving is with a bird play gym outside the cage. Toy puzzles can stimulate the mind and provide exercise.

Grooming

Many Amazon parrots enjoy taking baths. Additionally, regular bathing aid in maintaining the health of the bird’s feathers. You can spray warm water onto your bird with a spray bottle or place a shallow dish nearby for it to splash about in. Even some birds prefer taking showers with their owners. Occasionally offer your bird a wash (occasionally they may not be interested), and make sure they never get chilly with wet feathers.

In addition, because Amazons don’t naturally wear down their nails like they would in the wild, they frequently need their nails trimmed. A veterinarian can clip your bird’s nails for you and show you how to do it at home.
