Akita

akita

The Akita is a powerful, double-coated dog with a long history in Japan. They are renowned for their honor, bravery, and devotion. They are revered as family protectors and representations of longevity, happiness, and good health in their native land. Akitas are large, spitz-like dogs with thick bones and imposing posture. Akitas are little dogs with dense coats that come in a variety of colors, including white, and stand 24 to 28 inches tall at the shoulder. The huge, broad head is balanced in the back by a thick, curled tail.

The erect ears and dark, brilliant eyes enhance the breed’s distinctive appearance of alertness. Akitas are meticulous, quiet dogs. Akitas will willingly share their humorous, lovable side with family and friends, despite their suspicion of strangers and sometimes intolerance of other animals. They thrive when others are around. The powerful, free-spirited Akita has a natural instinct to defend the people they care about. They must have good socialization with both humans and other dogs from birth.

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

Akitas need a lot of exercise and rigorous training since they are exceptionally strong, athletic, and powerful. Additionally, they are known to shed more than the majority of dogs, so you’ll need to be a diligent groomer. This dog is also renowned for cleaning itself after meals in a manner similar to a cat. The owner of an Akita needs to be aware of when the dog may be overheating because this breed dislikes hot weather, primarily due to its thick hair.

Exercise

Due to their relatively high activity level, this breed needs between 30 and 60 minutes of exercise per day, including at least one or two brisk walks. However, you might want to avoid taking an Akita for a stroll in a dog park where other dogs can witness his violent tendencies. When bored or given excessive alone time, an Akita may develop some detrimental tendencies.

Grooming

The Akita has a thick, velvety undercoat underneath its stiff, straight outer coat. About twice a year, the breed will shed excessively at a rate that is relatively high. This breed typically requires very basic routine grooming for maintenance. Brushing should be done more regularly during high shedding seasons to help keep the coat healthy and reduce shedding. Brushing should be done once a week.

Training

Although they are considered obstinate and difficult, akitas are extremely intelligent canines. You can keep your Akita under control and bring forth their best features by giving them the proper obedience training and socialization. Because of this, training is difficult but also necessary. Early socialization is also important. The Akita may not always get along with other dogs, has a high prey drive, and is frequently wary of strangers.

Diet and Nutrition

Akita puppies will expand quickly, thus they require a high-quality, low-calorie diet to prevent overgrowth. Adult Akitas require three to five cups of dry food to be given to them twice daily. Make sure to keep an eye out for weight gain in your Akita and talk to your veterinarian about any particular requirements.
