Description

The African Owl pigeon is a medium-sized breed with an exceptional look. It is famous for having a small beak and a rounded skull. These birds carry their heads held back above an outstretched chest, and they should have highly ball-shaped heads. On the front of their breast, they have a crest of feathers. The jabot, commonly referred to as a tie or cravat, is the name of this feather crest. Their head is smooth and unadorned with coarse feathers, and their body is small and chubby. Their beak is small, robust, and shaped in a downward motion.

Origin/ Habitat

As with other varieties of domesticated pigeons, selective breeding produced this fancy pigeon breed, it is believed to have originally been introduced to Europe from Tunis, Africa, where the type originated, and were initially transported into England in the late 19th century. Due to the existence of a similar species of pigeon in England, which was given the name “English Owl” after the introduction of the African Owl, they were initially referred to as “Foreign Owls.” The African or “Foreign” kind of owl was significantly smaller than the other two varieties.

Behavior

One of the calmest pigeon breeds is the African Owl. It has outstanding behavior and is a great pet to raise.

As Pet

This breed is frequently mentioned as one of the most challenging to raise. African Owl pigeons require a dry environment with plenty of sunshine availability for housing. When this breed does not receive enough sunlight, it has a propensity to grow ill. If they reside in a consistently moist environment, they are also vulnerable to respiratory ailments.

The nutrition of the African Owl pigeon is largely similar to that of other pigeons. Fill your pigeon feeders with a variety of seeds, grains, nuts, and grasses, but also add mealworms, grit for better digestion, and make sure they always have access to fresh, clean water to complement their diet.
