Description

The common toad of Africa is a big, robust toad with warty skin. Females develop to a length of 70 to 130 mm (2.4 to 5.6 in), whereas males grow to a length of 62 to 91 mm (2.4 to 3.6 in) (2.8 to 5.1 in). The male has a single vocal sac under the chin and massive, parallel or kidney-shaped paratoid glands. In younger animals, the spine has a paler band. Males have black necks, while both sexes have white to beige underparts. The call is a two-pulse rattling sound that lasts for around 0.9 seconds. They would move through the water when threatened and bounce to disorient (or elude) predators. They can move through water by using their webbed rear feet.

Habitat

The African common toad is a widespread species that can be found in agricultural settings, montane grasslands, forest borders, and both wet and dry savannas. It breeds there as well and is frequently seen close to waterways. Although it is not a forest species, it can nevertheless be found in towns and degraded habitats in the forest zone (including gardens). Other species, like Amietophrynus garmani and Amietophrynus xeros, take its place in drier regions.
