Origin and History
The Cycladic Islands in the Aegean Sea—Santorini, Milos, Mykonos, and Naxos, to mention a few—are the origin of the native Greek breed known as the Aegean cat. Although the cat has been domesticated in Greece for many years, it is nevertheless regarded as a “new” breed because formal breeding just started in the early 1990s. As a result, the Aegean cat, which is rare, is the only type of cat that is unique to Greece. The breed has not yet received official recognition from a significant cat enthusiast or breeder organization.
