Australian Kelpie

australian-kelpie

The Australian Kelpie is a lean, energetic dog that can put in endless effort. He has boundless energy and is incredibly intelligent, alert, and eager.

The Australian Kelpie is a very dedicated and intensely loyal herding dog. He can work with sheep in either open fields or confined yards because he has a natural instinct and aptitude for it. This breed was created to resist the extreme heat and dry conditions of Australia’s huge open areas; however it was originally derived from Collie-type dogs imported from Scotland.

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

Australian kelpies require a lot of activity because they are bred to perform continuously in challenging situations. For this breed, you’ll require the most fundamental grooming abilities, which is advantageous because you won’t have time for it because you’ll be training your kelpie instead.

Exercise

Whether it’s jogging, hiking, retrieving games, trick training, herding, agility, swimming, disc dog events, or virtually any other competitive canine sport, if an Australian kelpie is primarily a pet, be prepared to provide hours of daily exercise and mental stimulation. The Australian kelpie is your dog if you’re seeking for a running buddy because of the breed’s excellent endurance. A kelpie should not always be kept on a leash.

Grooming

The short, weatherproof coat of the Australian kelpie is machine washable and wearable. If you wish to reduce shedding (the coat, though short, sheds a substantial amount), brush once a week or more frequently. When the Australian kelpie is soiled, bathe it.

Every two weeks, examine the nails and clip them as necessary. Dogs who work outdoors may naturally wear their nails down, requiring less frequent nail trimming. Check and clean the ears once a month for debris or redness. When the ears get unclean, clean them with cotton balls and pet ear cleaner.

Training

Australian kelpies, like the majority of herding breeds, are very intelligent and obedient. The intellect of the breed is comparable to that of the well-known Border collie. Kelpies are eager to learn new abilities and can be trained to do just about anything.

A kelpie’s strong mind can be put to good use through training, which also helps prevent boredom. With a kelpie, positive reinforcement techniques like clicker training produce fantastic results.

Australian kelpie puppies require a lot of socialization from an early age in order to develop a positive attitude towards pleasant strangers and a sense of security in a city setting. If the breed is not educated to stop once the alarm has been properly sounded, it may bark incessantly.

Diet and Nutrition

Australian kelpies, especially those who work, need to eat a high quality, nutrient-dense diet to fuel their active bodies. Ask your veterinarian or breeder for advice if you’re unsure of what or how much to feed your kelpie. Despite the fact that kelpies engage in so much physical activity that obesity is unlikely to affect them, older kelpies or those who are recovering from an accident may require a lower-calorie diet to prevent weight gain. In addition to contributing to joint conditions like arthritis, elbow dysplasia, and hip dysplasia, being overweight raises your risk of developing diabetes and other health problems.
