Description
Mosaic axolotls typically have their bodies speckled in white and black with a few golden sparkles. You can probably understand how vivid and distinctive they appear based on the colour description. Additionally, the gills of these axolotls have stripes of red and purple colour. Their multicolored eyes also give them a more distinctive appearance. The majority of mosaic axolotls often descend from a mix of albino and melanoid parents. They are primarily produced when two eggs combine to become one. As a result, each of their bodily cells randomly displays colors from both parents. And here is the actual trick to their unusual colour palette.
Temperament
The majority of mosaic axolotls are calm species that get along nicely with other axolotls and aquatic wildlife. They rarely engage in combat with tank mates and are not known to be hostile. Mosaic axolotls are primarily nocturnal animals that spend their days hiding out in caves and cracks in the environment.
They go out at night in search of food. Although they are generally more active at night, they can be active at any time of day in captivity. Mosaic axolotls are inquisitive animals that frequently explore their surroundings by using their tongues to taste everything. If you keep them as pets, you might notice that they taste the tank’s glass or your hand if you submerge it in water.
As Pet
Tank Setup
When thinking about bringing mosaic axolotls into your tank and taking the effort to start taking care of them, you must be very clear about what they need in their tank.
Tank Size
In order to provide your little axolotls with the finest care, selecting the appropriate tank is vital. It would be preferable to give them access to a large tank with enough room for them to swim freely. We advise choosing a 20-gallon tank for a single axolotl. To avoid your jumping partners from falling out of the tank and getting hurt, make sure the tank has a sturdy cover.
Water Parameters
Maintaining ideal water conditions is essential for your mosaic axolotl’s health. They typically do well in freshwater tanks with a pH range of 6.5-8. The pH range between 7 and 7.5 is ideal for maintaining the health of mosaic axolotls. The cold-water habitat is preferred by these axolotl species. Therefore, ensure that the water in their tank is not heated above 70 degrees Fahrenheit. They are most comfortable when the temperature is between 60 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
Diet & Food
The feeding needs of mosaic axolotls are not particularly complicated. They enthusiastically eat a variety of meat-based dishes.
They typically consume worms, insects, and small fish or fish larvae in the wild. Give them a similar food to assist their healthy growth when they are housed in your tank.
